Devon Foil age Groups 2007
On Saturday 17th March 2007, the sports hall at Estover Community College in Plymouth rang with the clashing of blades as Devons fencing youth vied for the honour of becoming the best fencer in Devon in their respective age groups.
Many a local derby ensued as old sparring partners met, each hoping to triumph and claim that all important point, was he on form today? had she improved since last year? Will we still be in the same age group?
Battle commenced with the Under 9 age group, where Tia Simms-Lymn (Fletewood School) ably triumphed over the poule to finish seeded 1st, she was also singled out by our style scouts as a very able young fencer with a good strong attack. With Tia the only girl at this age the boys then went on to their DE fights with Christopher Oddy winning through from second seed to eventually triumph over Oscar Stevens (No 1 seed) 10-8.
Next onto the piste were the Under 11 boys, a good strong showing of nine very able and closely matched fencers, who during the two poules so impressed our style scouts that we awarded four very well deserved certificates. The semi-finals saw Sidmouth club mates Rohan Knowles (No 1 seed) fencing returning champion Nicholas Koch (No 4 seed) with Rohan eventually triumphing 105, the other semi-final was between two more old rivals Joel Congdon (No 2 seed) and Jay Simms-Lymn (No 3 seed) with Joel successfully winning through 10-4, he then went on to win over Rohan 10-2, a very well deserved birthday present for Joel.
Under 13 Boys and Girls saw two 6 strong entries. The ladies fought well and were fairly evenly matched with Lisanne Koch of Sidmouth finally triumphing over Amber Waters after two good semi final fights, the first between Devonport High Girls School club mates Waters (No 3 seed) and Alexandria Barker (No 2 seed), and the second between another DHSG fencer Anna Chow (No 4 Seed) and Koch (No 1 seed). Meanwhile the boys had progressed to their semi final fights, where Plymouth fencer Matthew Davies (No 4 seed) faced club mate Owen Rees (No 1 seed) with Rees winning 15-7, on the other piste two more Plymouth fencers Kris Lawrence (No 2 seed) and Jason van der Schouw (No 3 seed) were in one of the most tensely fought bouts of the day. The very evenly matched young men eventually timed out at 10-10, with Lawrence winning priority, van der Schouw had to carry the attack and eventually won through giving a final score of 11-10. van der Schouw went on to take the title by beating Rees 15-9.
After the busy morning, a more sedate afternoon saw the arrival of the Under 15 and 17 fencers, who fought a poule unique prior to separating out into their relevant sex and age groups.
The Under 17 Ladies saw Grace Williams who had reigned supreme over the Poule Unique, and club mate Isla Findaly both from Sidmouth fencing for the title with Grace eventually winning convincingly 15-2.
Under 15 Ladies saw the first semi final between number 1 seed Georgina Barrington (Wellington) and Plymouth High Schools Rebecca Razey (No 4 seed) finish 154, with Barrington maintaining her deserved first seed. The other semi between another Plymouth High School fencer Holly Kingdon (No 3 seed) and Freya Davies (No 2 seed) from Plymouth saw Davies also maintaining her seeding after winning 155, in the final Barrington returning Under 13 champion and seeded 2nd in the Poule Unique won over Davies 15-8 to take the title.
The Under 15 boys saw Christopher Barker (No 2 seed) fencing fellow Devonport High Boys School club mate Tom Nicholas (No 3 Seed) for the pleasure of tackling Plymouths David Stewart-Watson (No 1 seed) in the final, Nicholas triumphed over Barker 1511 before being defeated by Stewart-Watson seeded 3rd in the Poule Unique 153.
Although the style awards are given mainly to encourage our younger fencers to continue to develop the skills and good practises they have been taught by their coaches, it is felt that all fencers should receive acknowledgement for good fencing and as such some of the Under 15 and 17 fencers also received certificates.
We would like to thank all the fencers and their parents for helping to make the competition a success and hope you all enjoyed yourselves, whether as a fencer or spectator and look forward to seeing you all at the next competition.
Our thanks also go to the presidents who gave freely of their time spending the whole day refereeing, and the ladies who kindly provided the refreshments to keep us all going.
