Devon Foil Team Relay

Saturday the 16th June saw the first Devon Foil Team Relay competition take place. This competition has been introduced with the intention of giving younger fencers the opportunity to join their more experienced club mates in an event which will allow them to experience a fencing competition without having to “go it alone”.

The feedback received from both fencers and parents alike that experienced the competition on Saturday was very positive with comments ranging from “lots of fencing” to “really friendly” and “when’s the next one”.

With seven teams entered the format allowed each fencer to compete in a maximum of 18 fights (if a team of three), with a maximum time duration of 30 minutes for each round or first team to 36 hits. The competition was a Poule Unique with no DE – so every hit counted.

The first couple of rounds saw some teams “timing out” but everyone soon got the hang of getting on and off piste at speed and by the end of the day everyone was very adept at “plugging in”.

A very big thank you to all who fenced – without you there wouldn’t have been such an enjoyable day’s fencing (and the mums and dads who delivered them to the venue on time), our refs who worked very hard indeed as breaks were few and far between. The three of them adjudicated a total 189 fights, I don’t know about our fencers not having fenced so many fights in one day – I don’t think our referees had ever refereed so many either.

Congratulations to the winners, very well done to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing you all at the next event.
